Erebus Academy driver Bailey Sweeny has come through his first ever race of the 2020 Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia 86 series at Mount Panorama, Bathurst to claim 15th in a 26 car field.
Making his debut in the series and at Bathurst, the notorious mountain layout produced several race incidents and saw the safety car employed when fellow competitor Jake Lougher ground to a halt just after The Chase.
Sweeny clocked a race time of 23:04.0939 with his best lap of 2.42, again, only 2 seconds off race winner and Australian champion Aaron Borg’s time of 2.40.1
The teenage karting whiz from Bateman’s Bay on the NSW south coast joined the Erebus Academy program after impressing at trials at Norwell in late 2019 and has been preparing ever since for the 2020 season.
Sweeny’s major sponsor, All 4 Mechanical, takes pride of place on the bonnet and both side panels, with other supporters including Onelife Gym, Deli on Perry, Hip Pocket Workwear Batemans Bay, Pit Lane Media and Diamond Helmet Designs.
Race 2 begins tomorrow at 12.50pm local time with the third race coming shortly after at 3.20pm.
